Common NDIS mistakes and how to avoid them.

Here at Leap in! HQ, we hear all about people’s NDIS journeys. And often, people who have been with the NDIS for a while look back and say “I wish I’d known that before!”.

When something is new, it can be daunting and confusing but the right information is always available if you know where to look.

To help give your NDIS journey the very best start, we thought we’d share some tips for how to avoid common pitfalls. And, if you’re only just getting started with the NDIS, check out New to the NDIS? Start here.

1. Assuming your supports roll over automatically with providers.

Every time you receive a new NDIS Plan, you need to contact existing service providers and get a new service agreement if you want to continue receiving their support. This is the case even if you’ve been with that service provider for years or decades.

It’s a great idea to ask your providers to send you a reminder when your service agreements require renewal.

2. Not applying the “reasonable and necessary” test to purchases.

It’s essential that you can demonstrate how each purchase made with your NDIS funds meets the “reasonable and necessary” criteria. Everyday items not related to your disability cannot be purchased with NDIS funds. This includes prescription medication, vitamins, food, groceries, electricity and rent or mortgage payments.

Ask yourself “would this be something that anyone in the broader community would have to pay for?” If the answer is yes, then chances are you can’t pay for it through your NDIS Plan.

3. Not being prepared for your NDIS plan meeting or plan reassessment.

Even if you’ve been with the NDIS for a while, it’s worthwhile being well prepared for your plan meeting or plan reassessment. Being prepared is also the best way to ensure you get the supports you really need.

Spend some time reviewing your goals, current supports and ideal future supports. The Leap in! app has a dedicated section where you can add all the information needed for your meeting so you feel organised and confident.

4. Not using all of your NDIS funding.

Did you know that a lot of NDIS funding never gets used? While there are many reasons why people don’t use all of their NDIS funding, sometimes it’s simply a case of not understanding how to get the most out of your plan.

There are loads of resources available including on the Leap in! website to help you understand the budgets in your plan and how to use your funds.

If you think some personal guidance would be helpful, sign up for Leap in! plan management and access your Monthly Budget Health Check to know whether your spending is on track or off track.

5. Not asking for help when you need it.

Now the NDIS has been going for a while, chances are other people have been through whatever dilemma you are facing. Help is always at hand and there’s no such thing as a silly question!

Reach out to people in your networks, ask your local area coordinator, join a group on social media or chat to the friendly Crew here at Leap in! if you have any questions.
