Everything you need to know about the latest NDIS update.
Four times a year, the government issues a report on the impact of the NDIS and planned changes.
Here at Leap in! HQ, we’re serious about making sure all the essential information from these reports is available and easy to understand.
The NDIS now has nationwide coverage.
The good news is that the NDIS is now available across all states and most Australian territories, with almost 300,000 participants signed up.
The exceptions are Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands who will have to wait a little longer to access the NDIS – it rolls out in these areas from 1 July 2020.
That means that eligible participants living in the city, a regional area or a remote location can commence their NDIS planning and start accessing the benefits of the NDIS.
So, if you’re thinking of getting an NDIS Plan but haven’t taken that first step, now is a good time!
Greater diversity of participants.
Participants from more diverse backgrounds are signing up in increasing numbers. There has been a big increase in the number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders joining, as well as new members from various culturally diverse backgrounds.
There have also been increases in the number of people with psychosocial disability entering the scheme, along with young people in residential aged care, and remote or very remote residents.
Supporting participants with psychosocial disability.
A new process should make it easier for people with psychosocial disability or NDIS eligible mental health conditions to apply for the NDIS.
This new process includes:
Being able to speak to a support worker or other person who can begin an NDIS application for you.
The option to provide consent for a support worker to be your trusted contact and manage communication with the NDIA on your behalf.
Helpful information including videos and fact sheets can be found here.
Improved interpreter services.
If using an interpreter would make it easier for you or someone you care for to access the NDIS, there are now more resources to help. More than 3,000 interpreters across Australia are available, with over 160 languages supported. For more information, check out this page.
Plan management is growing.
More NDIS participants, especially those over the age of 25, are choosing a plan manager (like Leap in!) to help them manage their NDIS funding, service providers and supports.
In fact, the proportion of participants who have a plan manager increased from 13% to 34% in the three months to June 2019.
How much of your plan you spend is related to how many plans you’ve had.
People who have been receiving NDIS supports for longer are using much more of their plans. People on their first plans actually spend less than half of their allocated funding!
Make the most of your NDIS funding.
Here at Leap in! we are here to help you find the right service providers and supports to ensure that you make the most of your NDIS Plan and budgets. We also help you track how you are progressing with your budget categories with alerts if you are on track or off-track (overspending or underspending) throughout the year.
