Kids and the NDIS.

Here at the Leap in! HQ, we often help parents who are trying to navigate the NDIS for their children with disability.

Young Children and the NDIS.

Children with a disability can access some support for their education through their school but did you know they can also receive support through the NDIS?

Families of children with disability can also receive support for themselves to help their child participate in everyday activities.

Children are assessed in two ways for NDIS access:

1. Children aged 0-6 years

A child aged 0-6 years doesn’t need a diagnosis of disability to benefit from the NDIS but you do need to meet with a NDIS early childhood partner to discuss your child’s needs and goals. You’ll talk about things like how your child manages daily activates and how much support you think your child needs for certain tasks.

Additionally, they must:

  • be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or other Visa holder with a Protected Special Category Visa
  • live in an area where the NDIS is operating.

2. Children aged 7 years or older

For children aged seven years or older to access the NDIS they must:

  • have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities
  • be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or other Visa holder with a Protected Special Category Visa
  • live in an area where the NDIS is operating.

Support for your child with a disability.

Once you receive your NDIS Plan, you can get access to things like:

  • support for daily living activities that are impacted by your child’s disability
  • therapeutic support
  • modifications to your home
  • equipment or technology
  • modifications to your car.

Generally, the NDIS won’t fund a support that:

  • isn’t related to your child’s disability
  • replicates other supports already funded by mainstream services like the education or health systems
  • is part of daily living costs.
