NDIS mistakes and how to avoid them.

Here at Leap in! we hear about some of the mistakes people make in their NDIS journeys.

Getting prepared for your first NDIS Plan meeting or Plan Review can be a pretty stressful time. Organising all of the different pre-planning components (and remembering it all) can be tricky, especially when done under pressure.

This week, we’re taking a closer look at some common pre-planning NDIS mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Leaving your planning to the last minute.

Some things can be achieved at the last minute but pre-planning for your NDIS Plan meeting or Plan Review is not one of them. You could miss out on some of the funding you need, simply because you try to ‘wing it’ on the day of your Plan meeting.

To help you get ready for your NDIS Plan meeting, we’ve written a handy pre-planning checklist, which you can find here.

2. Not setting clear goals.

Your NDIS Plan will only be approved if it is ‘reasonable and necessary’ for you and your disability, and if it will help you to achieve your goals. An important part of this is setting clear and relevant goals for what you want to achieve to live your best life.

It is very important to think about what formal or informal (paid or unpaid) supports you might need to achieve your goals too.

If you need help with goal setting or you’re not sure where to start, you can find some useful information in one of our previous articles here.

3. Not understanding the categories, terms and how your Plan works.

Another common mistake is not taking the time to properly understand the NDIS terms, categories and how your Plan works.

To make the most of your NDIS Plan, understanding all the categories, terms and how it works is very important. It’s a good idea to brush up on all the NDIS terminology so you can be confident in your Plan meeting.

We’ve put together a few lists to help you get your head around the terms used in your NDIS Plan. You can find our first one here and part 2 here.

Our Latest News section also has a wealth of information ready for you to read that answer some of our most common questions. Start reading here.

4. Forgetting the details.

It is so important to have as much detail as possible in your pre-planning.

The Leap in! app was developed to help support you in preparing for your Plan meeting or Plan Review meeting. You can find more about the app here.

5. Forgetting your questions.

It’s normal to have questions! You might think you’ll remember them if you don’t write them down, but many people do forget some important things when they’re under pressure.

So, write everything down so that you don’t remember an important question until after your Plan meeting has finished.

6. Being afraid to speak up.

If you’re not sure about anything, or you don’t quite understand a part of your Plan while you’re in your Plan meeting, don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s your plan after all!

It can be hard to talk in so much detail about your personal situation but remember your NDIS Planner or LAC is there to help you.
