The benefits of being creative.

Did you know that finding time to be creative can make you happier? The creative crew here at Leap in! have been exploring creativity and the positive impact it can have on our lives.

The wonderful thing about creativity is that there are many different ways to be creative, so there’s sure to be an activity that appeals to you.

So, what is creativity?

Creativity involves the use of imagination or ideas to create something or think about a subject in a new way.

We use creativity when we solve problems and when we communicate with others. But today, we are talking about the practical aspects of creativity – things like painting, colouring in, drawing, theatre, singing, playing music, dancing, sewing, woodwork or crafts. All the fun stuff!

Creativity feels good.

Think back to the last time you were creative. What were you doing? How did it make you feel? Chances are you felt happy and less anxious. There’s a good reason for that.

Research shows that being creative brings positive emotions and contributes to an overall sense of well-being. By focusing on creative activities, we forget about other things which also helps to reduce stress and worry.

Other benefits of creativity

  • Connect with people who enjoy the same activities
  • Find new ways to express yourself
  • Discover hidden talents
  • Be playful and have fun
  • Build confidence
  • Relieve stress and improve quality of life
  • Improve coordination

Everyone has the potential to be creative regardless of your age or ability. In fact, when it comes to art, some studies show that more people with a disability are likely to create art than people without a disability.

Many organisations offer classes or workshops where you can learn creative activities and meet new people.

Where to start?

If you are unsure what activities would suit you, do some research, talk with your family or friends or a support worker about what is available in your area.

Here are some tips to help get you started on your path to creativity.

  • Enrol in a class or workshop
  • Buy some art supplies like paints and canvas, or pencils and a sketchbook and experiment
  • Watch a performance, like a play or concert
  • Find a ceramics or pottery class in your area
  • Try beading, jewellery-making or scrapbooking
  • Join a singing group or choir
  • Volunteer at an arts organisation

Perhaps try some different things and see what you like. Ultimately creativity is an opportunity to explore and celebrate your uniqueness so be curious and have fun!
