Plan managed vs self managed: Which NDIS option is right for you?

Choosing how to manage your NDIS Plan is an important decision. It can impact how much time you spend on admin, the types of providers you can use and the level of support you have.
The two main options are plan management and self-management. Some people even combine both. Knowing the differences can help you decide which approach suits your life best.

Key points

  • When deciding whether plan management or self management is right for you, consider whether you have time and energy to stay on top of administrative tasks

  • With plan management, there’s less admin as you don’t need to process NDIS provider invoices or manage claims

  • You also get extra help from someone in your corner who understands NDIS rules.

What’s the difference between being plan managed and self managing?

Plan management.

With plan management, a registered plan manager like Leap in! handles the financial and administrative side of your NDIS Plan. That includes paying providers, processing invoices, and keeping your budget on track. You get more time and less paperwork, while still choosing the supports that work for you.

Self-management.

Self-management means you take care of everything yourself. You pay providers, manage claims, keep records and make sure you’re meeting NDIS requirements. It offers maximum flexibility, but you’re responsible for all the details.

Combination option.

Did you know you can do both? Many people choose to self-manage part of their plan and have a plan manager support them with the rest. For example, some of our Members self-manage their core funding for day-to-day purchases, while we support them with more complex categories like capacity building or capital. You still get access to the Leap in! app, which shows funding periods and when your next fund release is due.

Benefits and considerations.

Plan management benefits.

  • Less admin – no need to process invoices or manage claims
  • Expert help – someone in your corner who understands NDIS rules
  • Support with changes – stay informed about NDIS updates and how they affect your plan
  • More time – focus on your goals, not paperwork
  • Provider flexibility – use registered and unregistered providers
  • Budget visibility – with tools like the Leap in! app

Things to consider:

  • You still approve payments and manage your services
  • You rely on someone else to make payments on time

Self-management benefits.

  • Full control – you manage how and when providers are paid
  • Flexible pricing – you can negotiate rates and choose any provider
  • Personal relationships – deal directly with your support team

Things to consider:

  • You’re responsible for following NDIS rules and pricing
  • If you pay above the NDIS price guide limits, you cover the gap
  • Admin fatigue is real – over time, managing everything yourself can become exhausting

Questions to ask yourself.

  • Do I want support to navigate NDIS rules and updates?
  • Am I confident managing payments, invoices and budget records?
  • Do I have the time and energy to stay on top of admin?
  • Would expert guidance help me get more out of my plan?
  • Am I open to a combination approach to reduce stress?

Quick checklist.

  • I want less paperwork and admin.

  • I’d like expert help understanding my NDIS Plan.

  • I want to stay up to date with NDIS changes.

  • I want to use both registered and unregistered providers.

  • I’m interested in managing some parts of my plan, but not all.

If you said yes to most of these, plan management, or a combination approach, might be the best fit.

Self-management can work well for some people, but it can also lead to stress or burnout. Many Members tell us they started out managing everything on their own, but over time, it became too much. Choosing plan management means gaining a partner who supports you, helps you stay on top of the rules and makes sure nothing gets missed.

With all the changes in the NDIS over the past few years, having someone to keep you informed and confident can make a big difference.

Support, your way.

Whether you want full plan management or just support with some areas, Leap in! is your trusted partner. We’ll take care of the details, help you understand how your funding works, and keep you up to date with changes that might affect your plan.
