What to do if you spend your NDIS funding early.

One of the regular questions we are asked here at Leap in! HQ is what happens if I spend my NDIS funding early?

Running out of money can be stressful. The NDIA won’t usually approve an increase in funding if you have run out of money because you haven’t budgeted properly.

Keep your spending on track with the Leap in! app.

When you’re plan managed by Leap in!, the budget section of our app (now available for web) provides a real time view of your NDIS plan and the amounts of all your budget categories. It even has a budget tracker which tells you how you are going with Spending On Track or Spending Off Track alerts for each of your budget categories.

Our plan managers also provide great advice on how to maximise your individual budgets and can connect you with local supports providers for a range of services when you don’t already have them in place.

Sometimes things happen…

Sometimes though, things happen that are outside your control such as:

  •        Your needs become different to what they were previously
  •        Changes to the care or support provided by family or friends
  •        You move house, or begin living with new people

When your circumstances change.

If your personal circumstances change significantly and this affects the supports you need, it is important to let the NDIA know.

You do this by completing a Change of Circumstances form which asks you to provide information about the change that has occurred and explain details about the new situation. It is important to include as much information as possible and provide evidence of your change in circumstances if requested.

You can contact the NDIA in one of the following ways:

  1. In writing (by email or mail)
  2. By phone
  3. In person at your local NDIA or LAC (Local Area Coordinator) office

You can find all the NDIS contact details on their website.

Not all change of circumstances will result in a review of your plan or funding. The NDIA will assess your situation and determine if a review of your plan is required. Assessments are usually conducted within 21 days but can take longer.

If you have an immediate and urgent need for additional funding, the NDIA will sometimes approve emergency funding while a review of your plan takes place.
