Getting ready for the NDIS when you have Down Syndrome.

Today, we thought we would investigate and share how the NDIS can help members with Down Syndrome (and parents and carers of children with Down Syndrome).

Is Down Syndrome covered under the NDIS?

If you or your child have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome, you may be eligible to receive assistance and support services under the NDIS. Just like participants with any disability or condition, your access will be determined by how your condition impacts you/your child’s daily life.

What support might I receive under the NDIS?

There are a wide range of support services available to help you if you are looking for assistance managing a Down Syndrome diagnosis. Supports can help you adapt to day-to-day life with Down Syndrome as well as help you achieve your goals and your NDIS funding will be determined based on what is ‘reasonable and necessary’.

Some NDIS approved supports may include:

  • Paediatricians
  • Speech therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Accommodation support services
  • Early Childhood Intervention
  • Education
  • In-home support
