How to set and achieve your goals.

We often talk about the importance of setting goals when you prepare for your NDIS Plan meeting so you can receive the funding you need.

Today, we’ll take a closer look goals, why they’re important for your NDIS Plan, and how you can set, track and manage your goals to help you make the most of life with your NDIS Plan.

First up, what exactly is a goal?

What is a goal?

Goals are things you want to achieve with support from the NDIS and other supports and services. For your NDIS Plan to be approved, your goals need to involve the supports you are requesting to be able to achieve them. For example, this could be a piece of assistive technology to help you complete a specific daily task without having to rely on a support worker.

Goals can vary in the length of time it takes to achieve them. These are categorised by the NDIS as either short, medium or long-term goals.

Short-term goals

If you can achieve your goals in under 12 months, then they’ll be short-term goals.

Your short-term goals might look something like this:

  • This year, I want to be more independent and able to dress myself without a support worker
  • This year, I want to join a community art class and learn how to paint.

Medium or long-term goals

If it will take a number of years to achieve your goals, then they’ll be medium or long-term goals. It can be helpful to break these down into short-term goals as small steps towards achieving your bigger life goals.

Your medium to long-term goals might look like:

  • I want to get and keep a job so I can pay my own bills
  • I want to build the skills I need to learn better and complete school or a university degree.

Why is goal setting important for pre-planning and my NDIS Plan?

The NDIS will provide funding for things that are reasonable and necessary for improving your wellbeing with your disability. The support you purchase needs to be related to your disability and help you to achieve your goals.

By setting goals, you are showing the NDIS how you plan to improve your wellbeing and achieve more in life with the supports you are requesting. Without goals, your Plan will not be approved.

How do I set my goals?

When you sit down and set your goals, make sure you keep on thinking about the big questions and make sure you answer them every step of the way:

  • Where do you want to go in life?
  • What would you like to achieve?
  • What is stopping you from achieving them?

Think about your daily life and what each day, week and month looks like. Do you need any extra supports for your everyday activities? You should try to be as specific as possible.

How do I track my goals?

It’s important to track your goals to make sure you’re staying on the right path to achieving them. Deciding on time frames when you set goals and when to review them can help you to stay on track. It will also show you if you need to be more proactive to make your goals happen.

If you put a 12-month time on your goal to find a part time job, but you review and find that 6 months later you haven’t even finished writing your CV, you can then do something about that. Taking action half-way through and achieving even part of your goal is better than getting through a busy year and realising at the last minute that you haven’t achieved things that you wanted to.
